South Korea | 2024 l Korean, Japanese and English | Horror/Mystery | M One of the highest-grossing South Korean films of all time, Exhuma digs far below the surface, using supernatural signifiers to dress a plot that wrestles intensely with Korea’s past. The film stars South Korean acting legend Choi Min-sik, unforgettable as the vengeance-driven lead of Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy , alongside Yoo Hae-jin ( A Taxi Driver ), Kim Go-eun ( Love in the Big City ) and Lee Do-hyun, whose performance won him Best New Actor at South Korea’s Directors Cut Awards, where Exhuma also took home Best Director and Best Screenplay. The film opens as a young rising shaman duo, Hwa Rim and Bong Gil, are summoned to save the newborn of a wealthy family living in LA. Once they arrive, Hwa Rim senses the dark shadow of an ancestor has latched onto the family in a so-called ‘Grave Calling’. To exhume the grave and lay the ancestor to rest, Hwa Rim brings in top-tier geomancer Sang Deok and mortician Yeong Geun. To their dismay, the four find the grave in a shady, remote corner of Korea. Unaware of the consequences, the exhumation goes ahead — unleashing a malevolent force buried underneath. Presented by Sydney Opera House and Asian Cinema Collective
