We’ve all been there – taking hundreds of shots on our travels and ending up with barely a dozen good images. This workshop with photojournalist and Art Gallery of New South Wales tour leader Tony Maniaty is for keen travellers who want to close that gap. Using just your smartphone, you’ll learn the same principles working photographers rely on – reading the light, foreground and background, spotting a great shot before it passes you by – skills you can apply to every cityscape, marketplace and landscape you visit in future. To start, we will cover the basics of travel photography – composition, lighting, storytelling through images, getting the most out of your phone’s camera. Then we’ll walk through busy inner Sydney, shooting the four themes that separate a real travel story from tourist snapshots: the architecture and small details that give a place its character; colour and local style; candid street life; and portraits of people you meet along the way. We’ll finish at the fabulous Kimpton Margot Sydney Hotel for a relaxed group review where we’ll share honest feedback on what's working plus some tips on post production possibilities on smartphones including cropping, image control and more, followed by drinks together. You’ll leave with sharper photographic instincts, a handful of great images and a fresh way of seeing the world. The workshop is limited to 15 people.
