home/land – Artist film screening
Sat, 21st Nov 2026 12:00 pm
home/land is a day-long film program co-curated by artists and filmmakers Alana Hunt and Kush Badhwar. Featuring films by Kamal Aljafari, Richard Bell, Don Featherstone, Forensic Architecture, Alana Hunt, Alba Jaramillo, Narelle Jubelin, Sanjay Kak and John Smith, the program builds a conversation across different times and places about home: a place of nurture and intimacy, yet also one riven with conflict. home/land moves from a road development in east London (Blight) to the mortgage of a home on a Caribbean island and former US military test site (Visita guiada); from memories of a Palestinian community now under occupation (Return to Al-Ma’in), to the family album of a home built in the suburbs of Dharug Country in north-western Sydney (Ilford colour); from subversive psychoanalysis (Scratch an Aussie) and inverted ethnographies (BabaKiueria) to real estate in post-apartheid South Africa (A house and a home); and from bulldozers in Ramleh and Jaffa (The roof) to the largest non-nuclear explosion in Australian history (Surveilling a crime scene). Together, these films explore how housing, belonging and dispossession are felt and lived across vast geographies where the need for shelter meets the realities of territory, ownership and displacement. With introductions from co-curators Alana Hunt and Kush Badhwar. Co-presented with The Ultimo Institute and UTS Gallery & Art Collection as part of the program series accompanying Alana Hunt’s solo exhibition To the Owner, presented at UTS Gallery until 18 December 2026. About the co-curators Alana Hunt is an artist and writer living in Gadigal Nura/Sydney. Working across film, photography, printed matter, installation and publishing, her research-driven and socially engaged practice examines how colonisation continues to shape relationships to land, home and complicity. Hunt’s films have screened at Visions du Réel, Nyon, Switzerland; Antenna Documentary Film Festival, Sydney; Revelation Perth International Film Festival; and Sharjah Film Platform 7. She is currently a resident at the Clothing Store Artist Studios at Carriageworks. Kush Badhwar works across filmmaking, artistic and urban research as ongoing processes of being with ideas and places over time. His work often explores the gradual formation of counter-narrative in response to rapid and drastic changes in water and land use, often in urban peripheries. Badhwar’s work has screened across campuses, exhibitions, festivals, and other social contexts, including Addis Video Art Festival, Ethiopia; Experimenta Bangalore, India; and Videobrasil, Brazil.
