Shattered and Stained — Toby Halligan Exhibition: Wednesday 11/11/2026 – Sunday 29/11/2026 Opening celebrations – Friday November 13 from 6pm to 8pm Shattered and Stained The world can seem like a broken mess. This show tries to keep things light and bright anyway. I started painting during the Melbourne lockdowns, when the only view going was whatever was out the window — increasingly, whatever I could put on a canvas instead. My work has always involved vivid colours, and people keep telling me my paintings remind them of stained glass windows. There’s almost always a horizon – something to look forward to. I like building up layers often using Sydney beach sand to provide texture and depth to make my paintings tactile and touchable and then flood it with colour until they glow with luminosity. Shattered: the fractured grid, the cracked lines running through everything. Stained: the light that gets in anyway, vivid and unrepentant. This is bright, colourful art for lifting people up — because glass holds its colour best where it’s already broken.
