In response to the genocide occurring in Gaza, Teachers and School Staff for Palestine South Australia is organising a screening of The Palestine Exception documentary and a mutual aid market to raise funds for the Aida Youth Centre at the Aida Refugee Camp in Bethlehem, Palestine. The proceeds from the screening will go directly towards the centre's educational and psychosocial support programs, including arts classes, sports training and academic assistance. The proceeds from our inaugural film fundraiser + mutual aid also raised funds for the Aida Youth Centre, and we are committed to support their work in the long-term. All the way until Palestine is free, from the river to the sea. The Palestine Exception (2025) is a documentary film directed by Jan Haaken and Jennifer Ruth that chronicles the widespread 2023–2024 U.S. university campus protests against Israel's ongoing occupation and genocide of the Palestinian people, and the systematic suppression of pro-Palestinian voices within higher education. The film features professors and students as they join calls for a ceasefire and divestment from companies that do business with Israel and face waves of crackdown from administrators, the media, the police and politicians. Scholars from diverse disciplines explain what is at stake in these protests and why so many young people identify with the Palestinian cause. The documentary unfolds as a story of college campuses as sites of both rebellion and repression, places where personal and collective histories converge in unexpected ways. Our Mutual Aid Market and Raffle Before and after the screening, browse our Mutual Aid Market stalls and Silent Auction. We will also hold a raffle on the night, with a variety of prizes including artworks, art packs, book bundles, and other special items. In addition to the Aida Youth Centre, a portion of the proceeds from both the market and raffle will also go towards Aboriginal-led mutual aid call-outs and/or community initiatives here on Kaurna Yerta as a way to pay the rent. Pay the rent is a practice that acknowledges we live, work and organise on stolen Aboriginal land, and that ongoing colonisation continues to cause dispossession and inequality here in so called Australia. Contributing to Aboriginal-led mutual aid call-outs and community initiatives not only recognises our local responsibility but it is also a way to recognise the connections between struggles here and in Palestine. While we do not know at this stage what specific mutual-aid call outs we will be responding to, we will share details (including receipts of donations) through our social media accounts once this information becomes available. Can you contribute? 🍉 food items and baked goods 🍉 arts, crafts and other creations which can be sold, auctioned or entered into a raffle 🍉 vouchers or services 🍉 other products to sell to raise money for the cause Please get in touch with us via email teachers4palestine@proton.me or via Instagram.com/teachers4Palestine_SA

About the Host

Teachers and School Staff For Palestine S.A.

Teachers and School Staff for Palestine South Australia (TSS4P SA) is an activist and advocacy coalition formed in 2024 to challenge anti-Palestinian racism and rhetoric within the South Australian education system. Teachers and School Staff for Palestine would like to make it clear that we are: Pro-human Rights Anti-terrorist Against Antisemitism Pro-Human Rights We believe in upholding human rights for everyone, not a select few – as is outlined in the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We believe everyone on Earth has the right to safety, essentials for life and the ability to thrive and be free. We believe in the liberation of all people from systems of oppression and violence. We uphold the rulings of the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, as well as the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Anti-terrorist Let us be very clear: we are against terrorism. We are also against resistance to oppression and apartheid being labelled ‘terrorism.’ There is no legal or scientific definition consensus of terrorism; we go by the definition of terrorism as follows: the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims. Under International Law, Israel is an unlawful occupation, perpetrating violence, intimidation, and restriction or outright denial of essentials for life to the Palestinian people. We therefore believe that Israel is a terrorist state, and that any and all forms of resistance against that oppression – as outlined by the ICJ – is not terrorism. It is resistance to oppression and is legal under International Law. Against Antisemitism First and foremost, we are anti-Zionist. This does not directly or indirectly translate to being antisemitic. We denounce any hatred or bigotry aimed at Jewish people as a religious group. Jewish people, however, are not of a specific land or ethnicity; they are of a specific religion. A religion is not limited to living in or belonging to one region. It is a belief system one is born into or adopts. Arab people are Semites - a term invented by a German historian - linked through language, culture, and ancestry. Therefore, anything said or done against Arab people is, by definition, antisemitism. Further to this, no religious text can claim to be a legitimate real estate document which guarantees claims to a land through heinous acts of violence and displacement. The term ‘antisemitism’ has been hijacked and weaponised. Antisemitism and antizionism have been falsely conflated so that any criticism of Zionism is being labelled antisemitism, and criticisms can be silenced. Some Zionists are Christian, others are atheists. When we criticise Zionism, we are not criticising Judaism. Judaism is a religion and should be respected as such; Zionism is a settler colonial project created by an atheist and rooted in violence, oppression and apartheid and must be dismantled so Palestine can be free. Nothing can justify genocide. No one is free until we are all free. All children are our children.
