On Thursday 22nd October, @mothership.marrickville, Samira El Chami and Miya Miya Film Club present Frontiers of Dreams and Fears (Lebanon/Palestine, 2001) directed by Mai Masri, and Maradona's Legs (Palestine, 2019) directed by Firas Khoury. Samira El Chami is a Lebanese Australian artist whose work moves across film, sound and performance, engaging with memory, landscape and the conditions that shape how stories are carried. For this screening, @samiratron has selected Frontiers of Dreams and Fears, a film that speaks closely to these concerns. Frontiers of Dreams and Fears follows Palestinian children living in refugee camps in Lebanon as they travel to the border with Palestine. Moving between anticipation, memory and distance, the film explores what it means to grow up in relation to a place that remains out of reach. The children become witnesses and carriers of history, with ideas of return shaped by stories passed down, fragments held onto and landscapes seen but not crossed. It is a film about proximity and separation, and borders that are both physical and lived. Alongside it, Maradona's Legs follows two Palestinian boys searching for a missing Panini sticker of Diego Maradona during the 1990 World Cup. Set during the First Intifada, Firas Khoury's playful short finds humour and childhood imagination within a world shaped by occupation and restriction. Food will be shared from @sajhouse_, returning to Miya Miya. Manoush will be prepared fresh from 6:30pm to 8pm, bringing a taste of Lebanese street food into the night. We’ll also be serving Palestinian sweets from @yafasweet_! Proceeds will be split between @nationstation__ and @pcrf_australia, supporting two organisations doing vital work for the people of Lebanon and Palestine in the face of Western imperialism and Israeli occupation. Your ticket includes a meal, drinks from @gazacola.au and @salaamcolaaustralia, a donation, venue and projector hire, and film licensing. The films will be screened in Arabic with English subtitles. Tickets on sale September 11th.
