He’s considered one of the most important people in French pop, known for his often shocking songs that stirred up a lot of debate in France. His music went from jazz, chanson and yé-yé to rock, zouk, funk, reggae and even electronica later on. It’s hard to put him into a box because of his different musical style and unique personality, but he’s definitely made a big impact and is often seen as one of the world’s most influential pop musicians. Serge wrote over 550 songs, and they’ve been covered more than 1,000 times by all sorts of artists. His lyrics were full of wordplay, with funny, strange, provocative, sexual, satirical or even rebellious ideas. Since he passed away from a second heart attack in 1991, his music has become legendary in France. Even though he was a bit of a rebel in his time, he’s now one of France’s most beloved public figures. He’s also got a huge fan base around the world, with hits like ‘Je t’aime… moi non plus’ in the UK and ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ in Belgium.
