On Thursday 20th August, @mothership.marrickville, Miya Miya Film Club and Liberation Cinema present: Hit the Road (Iran, 2021), directed by Panah Panahi. @liberationcinema_ is a grassroots collective based on Gadigal Country dedicated to screening films that engage with anti-colonial, anti-imperialist, and liberation struggles. Their programming foregrounds cinema as a site of resistance, bringing together works that challenge dominant narratives and open space for political engagement. Panah Panahi's remarkable debut follows a family driving across Iran toward an uncertain destination. Confined largely to the interior of a car, the film unfolds through playful conversations, long silences, music, roadside encounters and the changing landscapes that pass beyond the windows. What begins as an affectionate family road trip gradually reveals itself to be something far more delicate, a journey shaped by separation, sacrifice and the impossibility of saying everything aloud. Although deeply rooted in the specificity of contemporary Iran, Hit the Road speaks to experiences that resonate far beyond its borders: migration, displacement, borders, state power and the quiet resilience of ordinary people navigating impossible circumstances. It is a deeply humane film, one that reminds us how acts of care often become forms of resistance in themselves. We're delighted to welcome back our friends from Darband to feed you on the night. @darband.syd is a Western Sydney Persian restaurant with decades of history, serving food grounded in tradition, memory and the shared rituals of the table. Their cooking carries generations of knowledge, celebrating the generosity and warmth that sits at the heart of Persian hospitality. As always, dinner is included with your ticket. All proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Refugee Advice & Casework Service (RACS), supporting people seeking asylum and refugees through free legal advice, advocacy and representation. Your ticket includes a meal from @darband.syd, drinks from @gazacola.au, your donation to RACS, as well as covering venue hire, projector hire and film licensing. The film will be screened in Persian with English subtitles. Tickets on sale July 23rd.
