Night Two: Beirut Friday 22nd May Phantom Beirut (أشباح بيروت, Lebanon, 1998), directed by Ghassan Salhab, unfolds in the years following the civil war. The film follows two men moving through a city that feels both familiar and estranged. Streets are rebuilt, but something intangible lingers. Memory is fractured, conversation circles, and the past resists being settled. What emerges is a portrait of a city suspended between reconstruction and amnesia. Ship of Fools (Lebanon, 2024) directed by Alia Haju, presents Beirut in the present tense, but no less unsettled. Characters move through a city marked by fatigue and inertia, where movement feels circular and the promise of change remains just out of reach. If the earlier film captures the quiet aftershock of war, this one reflects a condition that has stretched into the present. Across both films, Beirut is not simply a setting but a condition. Time folds in on itself, and history is felt less as something past than something continually lived. These are films concerned with what cannot be easily resolved, and with the ways people continue within that. On the night, food will be shared, with a live musical performance by @baytsaleh. Proceeds from the event will be donated to @nationstation__, a Beirut-based community kitchen and grassroots initiative providing meals, mutual support, and resource distribution. Their work directly supports people displaced through Israeli invasion and ongoing attacks on South Lebanon and Beirut.
